Drake Covers Complex…

February 8, 2010

…for the February/March issue. *Late Pass* I know this was posted on other sites a few weeks ago, but once I moved back into my place I discovered that the water from the flood damaged my phone/DSL connection…so once again I was without internet access for all of last week. Anywho I’m posting this because I wanted to comment on an excerpt from Drake’s interview and more importantly I wanted to post this track…

Bonus:
Drake – My New Shit ft.Von Pea (of Tanya Morgan) & Phonte

That Lil’ Wayne/Young Money stuff is cool but this is the type of Drake shit that I love. I just want to point out the fact that this guy’s ability to mesh well with everyone from Lil’ Wayne to Phonte is amazing.

See video of the cover shoot in Atlanta and read what Drake had to say about fellow up and coming rappers J. Cole, Wale and KiD CuDi after the jump.

Excerpt From Complex Interview…
Interviewer: Around the time that Kanye directed “Best I Ever Had,” it seemed like there was strife between your camp and Cudi’s camp because Kanye was so enamored of you while Cudi’s project was being worked on.

Drake: I wasn’t aware of that. Even so, I could understand. If Wayne were to be enamored—which is a great word—of another young artist, I would be like, “Damn, I’m here too!” But at the same time, it happens in more than one situation. It happens with ‘Ye, and I have a great relationship with Jay, and Jay’s got Wale and J. Cole, who’s one of my favorite dudes rapping right now. I’ve happened to have had more success. I made the most money, I have number-one records, those guys don’t have that shit. And it’s just facts, it’s not even my feelings or that I feel I’m more talented. That’s what the game is about, making great music that earns profit. When it comes to my relationship with the new dudes, I’m just excited for them. I get to sit back in a cool position and be like, “Yo, I’m excited to see you do it now because I know what it’s like, it’s gonna be so much fun for you…”

Interviewer: You feel like you’re at the finish line?

Drake: I’m at the starting line. Those guys are at home, putting on their tracksuits, getting ready to make their attack. When J. Cole gets it super-right, I think he’s gonna have a place as a Nas-type character who really stands for hip-hop, but still makes ill records that everybody fucks with.

*sigh* I already know that the part of his comment that’s underlined is going to rub people the wrong way. Look I’m a fan of Wale, J. Cole and Drake…and I’m anticipating hearing J. Cole’s debut album just as much as Drake’s (if not more). I’ve never heard Drake come off as arrogant in an interview, but this could be easily seen as that. I don’t think there’s any denying the fact that Drake’s the most successful out of the three at this point. Hell, the guy was been nominated for a Grammy….for a mixtape song. But like they say, it’s not what you say, it’s how you say it and I think he could’ve said that differently.

Also, I don’t understand what he means by “when J. Cole gets it super right”. Correct me if I’m wrong but J. Cole has released two well received mixtapes and he has more of a buzz than Drake had when he released Comeback Season (Drake’s 2nd mixtape)…..so what does he need to do to “get it super right”? Start singing in autotune?

Head over to Complex to read the rest of the interview.

New Reflection Eternal, Drake, Skillz, Jojo Pellegrino…

January 7, 2010

You know the deal, I’ve been away for a minute so I’m playin’ catch up. If you don’t already have these, here you go…

Reflection Eternal – Just Begun Ft. Jay Electronica, J. Cole & Mos Def
If Jesus listened to hip-hop this is what he’d have in his ipod.

Drake – It’s Been A Pleasure
Despite rappin’ along side Baby for damn near his whole album, the yellow one hasn’t lost a step. “If amazing was a young b***h, I’d be going to jail cuz I’m f**kin’ amazing

Skillz – Rap Up 09′
Smh, here’s this guy with his one song a year….now back to his job at Chik-fil-a.

Jojo Pellegrino – Triple Homicide Ft. Sean P & Inspectah Deck
I remember Jojo from a few years back. I thought he went to school or got a day job and gave up on rap. Oh well…I only gave this a listen because “the brokest rapper you know” is on it.

Bonus: Want to see a video of Drake on Nickelodeon’s version of “MTV Cribs” from back in his Degrassi days? Hit the jump…

These Are The Gangsta Killers…

November 16, 2009

…according to an article in GQ’s upcoming Man of the Year issue. Supposedly, Wale, Drake and KiD CuDi are responsible for killing gangsta rap and as a result, they’ve been named “the Gangsta Killers”. Well, I’m going to have to disagree….for 2 reasons:

1.) Gangsta rap isn’t dead. Maybe in the sense of N.W.A. “F**k The Police” it’s dead, but it’s still around. It’s just not getting as much shine as this whole tight, nut-huggin’ pants wearing hipster fad that’s going on right now.

2.) If gangsta rap was dead, these guys wouldn’t be the murderers. Kanye West & Lupe Fiasco birthed a lot of these new cats. Yeah I know there were others who influenced them, but those two played major roles in shaping their styles.

If you want to read the paragraph that GQ wrote about the “Gangsta Killers” go and buy the magazine…the “article” was garbage.

Side Note:
I rock with Drake, but isn’t that the jacket Vin Diesel had on in XXX? Nope, I think I got it…

…it’s the same jacket Akbar aka Wolf had on in The Education of Sonny Carson.

New Young Money, Ghostface Killah, 50 Cent, Lloyd…

September 29, 2009

Young Money Entertainment – Bed Rock Ft. Lil Wayne, Gudda Gudda, Nicki Minaj, Drake, Tyga, Jae Millz & Lloyd [Full Version]
Nicki Minaj’s rap voice is irritating as hell and since I’ve come to the realization that I can’t see her ass while I listen to her rap on this song, they might as well had left her off. Gudda Gudda needs to getta getta day job cuz he’s terrible. Other than that I fux with this song. Oh yeah, Omarion was on the original version, then he was dropped asked to be released from Young Money so they replaced him with Lloyd…..Lloyd > Omarion

Ghostface Killah – Back Like That Remix Ft. Kanye West & Ne-Yo
Ghost always goes in when talking about relationships…the original version of this song is one of my favorite Ghostface songs. Btw this is a bonus song off of Ghostdini Wizard Of Poetry In Emerald City which dropped on today….go and support real rap.

50 Cent – Dreamin (prod. Dr. Dre)
So I’m just gonna assume that it’s a wrap for 50’s rap career. I mean he’s dropped some really good singles over the past year (“Get It In”, “Get Up” & “Okay, You’re Right“) and yet they’ve failed to spark any interest in his eternally delayed album, Before I Self-Destruct. Then again if he drops anything remotely close to this again, he might as well retire.

Lloyd – Pusha Ft. Lil Wayne [Mastered]
Ummm I’ve said it before and I’m going to say it again…Lloyd’s last album was on point. That is all.

Drake – Forever…

September 22, 2009

feat. Kanye West, Lil Wayne & Eminem.

I said it before and I’ll say it again…Em bodied this damn song. I swear this is the Eminem that should’ve been rapping on Relapse. Anywho, people can talk about Jay all they want, but I don’t think there’s a rapper out there that wants it with Em.

Hype Williams directed the video. Ummm I hope Hype isn’t still charging a $1,000,000+ for his videos because they damn sure don’t seem worth it anymore. But then again were they ever really? Not knocking him artistically…that’s just a lot of damn money.

Btw you really should have this already…

The Yellow One…

September 9, 2009

…has released quite a few songs over the past week. I’m sure most of you have these already, but for those of you who don’t…

Drake – Fear
Ummm this is the type of song that makes all of these half ass rappers realize how much of a problem this guy really is.

Birdman aka Baby – Money To Blow Ft. Drake & Lil’ Wayne
I posted this song last week….once again, here’s the deal: This song is old. The original version came out over a year ago…before everybody set up permanent residency on Drizzy’s balls. Anywho, the original was made by some guy named Jerz Y.A. and it featured Drake ——> Jerz Y.A. – Money To Blow Ft. Drake

Drake – Forever Ft. Kanye West, Lil’ Wayne & Eminem
Here we go again, another old ass Drake song that’s been recycled. I really was looking forward to hearing this…until I heard it and recognized the beat and the hook were on a song that Drake dropped about a year ago. I must say, Em showed his ass on here though. Btw Drake’s verse was better on the original—–> Drake – Forever Ft. Lil’ Wayne & Kid Kid

Lil’ Wayne – My Darlin’ Baby Ft. Drake

Wayne would like to dedicate this song to Toya, Nivea, Lauren London, the random stripper who had his son not too long ago and all the girls in the world that he wishes he could f@#k. He’s such a charmer….you ladies should feel extremely special. P.S. You’re all one of a kind.

New Apathy, Birdman, Estelle, Drake, Shawty Lo…

August 23, 2009

Apathy – True Love Ft. Phonte
I’ve never heard of Apathy before this, but I’ll give anything a listen if it involves anybody from the Little Brother/Foreign Exchange/J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League crew. This features Phonte so it was a must listen for me. I’m glad I checked this out because the shit is pretty dope. Apathy’s upcoming album is titled Wanna Snuggle?, that’s hilarious….to me.

Birdman aka Baby – Money To Blow Ft. Drake & Lil’ Wayne
Ummm this song is old. The original version came out over a year ago…before everybody set up permanent residency on Drizzy’s balls. Anywho, the original was made by some guy named Jerz Y.A. and it featured Drake ——> Jerz Y.A. – Money To Blow Ft. Drake

Estelle – All Nite Long Ft. John Legend & Ludacris
I don’t know what to say about this song….okay, yes I do. This song sucks. Estelle is sing-rapping, John Legend sings the tired ass chorus and Ludacris’ verse just seems out of place and unnecessary. Btw I hate when people spell ‘night’ this way —> nite.

Drake – Killer Ft. Nipsey Hussle
I fux wit this. I’ve never listened to anything with Nipsey Hussle on it before this….I just couldn’t get pass the name.

Shawty Lo – A Town Ft. Ludacris, Gucci Mane & The-Dream
This is obviously supposed to be an Atlanta rap anthem….I think they could’ve went harder.

Somebody Pull Drake To The Side…

July 15, 2009

….and tell him to re-think this whole Young Money affiliation. I mean seriously, it hasn’t been a good look for him. First it was the BET Awards performance and now this…

Yep…Drake is now a spokesperson for Strapped condoms.

I know WTF? How? Why?

Well Lil’ Wayne is the main spokesperson for the line of condoms and I’m guessing he persuaded Drake to join him. Never heard of Strapped condoms?

Neither has Lil’ Wayne apparently or else he wouldn’t have a child with her and her, or one on the way with her and another one on the way with her.

Like seriously? I know that people pick celebrities to endorse their products because they feel that they’re more influential than some regular Joe Smoe, but picking a celebrity with 2 children by 2 different women and 2 children on the way by 2 more woman to endorse a line of condoms is just retarded. Either Wayne doesn’t use these condoms at all or he does and they don’t work…which is even worse. Either way nobody with an ounce of God given sense would purchase these things.

New Consequence, Slaughterhouse, Wale, Trey Songz, Drake…

July 6, 2009

Yeah I know, usually I post four songs at a time, but like I said earlier I’m playin’ catch up.

Consequence – Whatever You Want Ft. Kanye West & John Legend
I haven’t listened to this yet…but on another note “Grammy Family” was the ish.

Slaughterhouse – The One
I saw these guys at the Rock The Bells concert and enjoyed their performance. I’m definitely looking forward to their album.

Wale – Pretty Girls
I haven’t really listened to this, but I have listened to Wale’s mixtape Back To The Feature which is dope from beginning to end. If you haven’t heard it do yourself a favor and download it. It’s under the “Get Familiar” section to your left.

Trey Songz – I Need A Girl Remix Ft. Mase
If you attend Pastor Mason Betha’s church go play in traffic.

Drake – Best I Ever Had Remix Ft. Mase
If you give tithes to Pastor Mason Betha’s church go play in traffic…during rush hour.

Drake – Think Good Thoughts Ft. Phonte & Elzhi
I uploaded this last week but it cut off after about 30 secs…this is the whole song. Thanks Serena for pointing that out.
